Preserve the flavor of fall with this Slow Cooked Apple Sauce. The addition of spices brings up memories of the flavor of apple pie.
Slow Cooked Apple Sauce
6applespeeled, cored and diced or sliced
maple syrupto taste
For an optional apple pie flavor:
1/2teaspooncinnamonor add 1 cinnamon stick while cooking
allspice, nutmeg, cloves, cardamomsprinkle of each
1teaspoonapple pie spice mix optional to the mix above; this will have a similar effect as above spice mix
Place the apple slices/dices in your slow cooker. Drizzle with lemon juice, add salt and optional cinnamon (stick) and spices.
Turn the slow cooker on high and cook for 4 hours. Stir occasionally. At the 3 hour mark stir and taste your apple sauce. Depending on taste and the apple variety you use, you may want to add some sweetener. Start with 2 tablespoons of maple syrup and add more to taste.
Also depending on the apple variety used, the apple sauce may seem dry after 3 hours. Add a couple tablespoons of water or orange juice and cook for another hour.
For a super smooth texture you can blend the finished apple sauce with an immersion blender. For a medium texture mash with a potato masher.
If you want to can the apple sauce, fill it into sterilized mason jars. Otherwise it will also keep for a few weeks in the fridge.
