This rich Banana Chocolate Cake has chocolate cake layers filled with bananas, creamy chocolate mousse, and a chocolate glaze topping.
My husband and I love cake for dessert. And we also really like chocolate.
Not in a sickly obsessing kinda way, but as occasional treat (this is a cake blog, so who is judging anyway).
However, the fact that we are currently living in Thailand poses several obstacles to indulging in cake and chocolate too often. First of all, as some of you might know already, the house we are renting here has no oven 🙁
I know, kinda sad situation for a baker and cake decorator.
But I have learned to accept it as a current circumstance, that too shall pass. Turns out not being able to whip up baked treats myself is really good for my figure. Who would have thought!
So definitely no homemade, from scratch cakes for us at the moment.
The second obstacle is the fact that this is Thailand. If you don't know yet, Thailand is very close to the equator. Meaning, it's always, ALWAYS warm here. Well, I don't want to lie to you. It actually is always HOT here.
And don't get me wrong, I love the heat and all that it brings with it, like being able to wear flip flops all the time... But unfortunately my beloved chocolate can't stand the heat as well as I do. Whenever we buy chocolate from an air-conditioned store, we have to either eat it right away or go straight home to put it in the fridge.
Yeah, you read correctly. We have to keep chocolate in the fridge to keep it from melting. The only A/C at our place is in the bedroom and keeping chocolate in the bedroom somehow doesn't work. It's always gone in the morning. The mice from the attic probably come and get it when we are sound asleep, or something like that.
I don't know about you, but I don't really like chocolate from the fridge. It somehow isn't the real, enjoyable, soothing chocolate experience when you almost break a tooth trying to take a bite, if you know what I mean.
As you can see, chocolate and cake at our place aren't really an option. But we aren't entirely deprived of all things enjoyable and you don't have to send us a care package of home-made cake and chocolate goodies (because I know that is what you all wanted to do right now).
We found a solution. Cafes! Since we both already are addicted to love coffee we frequent cafes and coffee shops quite often. And many times they also offer cake here, specifically chocolate cake (see where I am going?)
You guessed right, instead of baking cake at home or trying to find a way to transport chocolate to and store it at our place, we get our fix outside the home. Every now and then we treat ourselves to cake at a cafe and more often than not it is some type of chocolate cake.
When we were in Georgetown, Malaysia last week (and everything I just mentioned about Thailand goes for Malaysia just the same) we indulged in a piece of this amazing Chocolate Banana Cake at a little cafe called Kaffa.

I absolutely love the combination of chocolate and banana! Oddly enough, my hubby and I had the most divine choc-banana cake at a cafe a few years back - we cannot remember which city or which cafe and I have tried a number of time to replicate the cake with no success. Think I'll give this one a try - looks delicious.

Thanks Jacquee, lovely to see you here 🙂
I agree, chocolate + banana are awesome. At our grocery store here in Thailand the only kind of chocolate cupcake we can buy is banana flavored. I love it!
