Introduction To Tokyo Treat
When it comes to experiencing the diverse and delicious world of Japanese snacks, TokyoTreat stands out as a gateway to an array of unique and flavorful treats. As a subscription box service, TokyoTreat offers a monthly delivery of handpicked Japanese snacks right to your doorstep.
In this TokyoTreat review, we'll delve into the flavour-adventure that awaits subscribers and explore what makes the TokyoTreat a popular choice among snack enthusiasts worldwide.
Tokyo treat snack boxes feature up 20 exclusive Japanese treats in each premium box that are seasonally curated.
Subscription Options
You can order a single box: This is a great option when you first want to try out the service, or if you are looking for special seasonal Japanese treats like Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's Day and more.
Or subscribe for a monthly snack surprise on your doorstep. There are options to purchase 3, 6, and 12-month plans. The larger a plan you choose, the bigger the discount per box. For a limited-time (at the time of writing - Jan. 2024) prices range from USD $37.50 for a single box to $32.50/box for a 12-month subscription.
Unboxing Experience
One of the most exciting aspects of TokyoTreat is the element of surprise that comes with each monthly delivery. The unboxing is a joy in itself! The Christmas box that my family and I got to try made for extra seasonal holiday fun.
Each box offers a diverse mix that reflects the rich tapestry of Japanese snack culture: from savoury treats to tasty rice crackers and hard candies to delicious chocolate, TokyoTreat takes pride in sourcing a wide variety of snacks. Subscribers get a bite of both well-known favorites and lesser-known gems.
NOTE: There is even a booklet explaining each item and potential allergens (wheat/gluten, dairy, eggs, vegan/vegetarian friendliness) in case this is a concern for you.
Variety Of Snacks Included
Our first box featured individually wrapped chocolate squares (Ghana), truffle potato chips, Christmas crackers, marshmallow twist, mini chocolate candies in a candy cane, fruity gummies in cake slice shape (the BEST gummy candy I ever had), Calpis soda can, spicy Instant ramen, sour cream and onion crackers and more.
Japan is known for it's unique limited-edition Kit Kat flavors and a different flavor pack is often included in the TokyoTreat boxes. We got a yummy bag of strawberry chocolate cake flavored KitKats. It was super cool!
Taste & Quality
The care and pride that TokyoTreat puts into carefully selecting and curating each item is so obviously noticeable. Every item arrived in great condition.
Of course, individual taste preferences always differ, but overall my entire family enjoyed the experience and flavors of the TokyoTreat goodies. The gummy candies with their bold fruity flavors where everyone's favorite, followed by the strawberry chocolate cake Kit Kat.
The milky Calpis Japanese soda we were all a bit hesitant about, turned out to be a huge surprise favorite. Thanks to the delicious acidity (almost citrusy) and effervescence the can was finished in no time.
We ended up a bit more divided on the savory items, which still ended up great. While my 9-year-old love the truffle potato chips, she left all of the Christmas pizza crackers for me to enjoy by myself.
Pricing And Value For Money
The price per box varies depending on the subscription level you choose (see Subscription Options - HERE). Additionally, take into account any additional shipping costs associated with your location. TokyoTreat ships its subscription boxes internationally, and shipping fees may vary depending on the destination. To my address, priority shipping charges are $12.50 per box.
To determine if TokyoTreat offers value for money, consider your budget, snacking preferences, and the overall experience you are seeking. Many subscribers appreciate TokyoTreat not only for the snacks themselves but also for the cultural exploration and excitement that comes with each monthly box.
This was certainly the case for our family. And for me personally, there is an additional nostalgic value.
Trying all the different Japanese candy and snacks brought me right back to high school. We had a Japanese foreign exchange student join us for 10th grade. And the next year 2 of my close friends spent a semester in Japan. These 3 friends gave me my first taste of Japan with the sweets, teas, and beautiful stationary items they brought back with them.
This Japanese subscription box let me relive all these warm memories!
Pros And Cons?
Pros:
- Cultural Exploration: TokyoTreat provides a chance to explore and experience Japanese snack culture from the comfort of your home. The curated selection often includes traditional and modern treats, offering a taste of Japan's diverse culinary (snacking) landscape.
- Variety: The monthly subscription boxes feature a diverse assortment of snacks, including both savory and sweet options. This variety allows subscribers to try a wide range of flavors, textures, and types of snacks, catering to different preferences.
- Convenience: TokyoTreat delivers Japanese snacks directly to subscribers' doorsteps, eliminating the need to search for these treats in local stores or order from multiple sources. The convenience of a monthly subscription is appreciated by those who enjoy trying new and unique snacks regularly.
- Limited Edition and Exclusive Items: Subscribers often receive limited edition or exclusive items that may not be readily available elsewhere. This adds an element of excitement and uniqueness to each snack subscription box.
- Community Engagement: TokyoTreat fosters a sense of community among subscribers through social media platforms. This allows individuals to share their unboxing experiences, trade snacks, and connect with like-minded enthusiasts, creating a social aspect to the subscription.
Cons:
- Cost: The subscription plans may be considered relatively expensive by some, especially when factoring in shipping costs for international subscribers. While the experience and variety may justify the price for many, it might not be the most budget-friendly option for everyone.
- Risk of Receiving Unfavored Snacks: Due to the surprise nature of the subscription boxes, there is a risk that subscribers may receive snacks they don't particularly enjoy. While the variety is designed to cater to different tastes, individual preferences can vary.
- Shipping Delays and Customs: International shipping may lead to delays, and some subscribers may encounter customs-related issues depending on their location. This could impact the timely delivery of the subscription boxes. We did not have any issues receiving our box!
- Single-Origin Focus: While TokyoTreat primarily focuses on Japanese snacks, some subscribers may desire a more diverse selection that includes snacks from various countries. Those seeking a broader international snack experience might find the single-origin focus limiting.
- Environmental Impact: The packaging materials associated with subscription boxes contribute to environmental waste. While some efforts are made to use recyclable materials, the overall impact on the environment is a consideration for environmentally-conscious consumers.
It's important to note that individual experiences with TokyoTreat may vary, and what may be considered a disadvantage for one person could be a positive aspect for another.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, TokyoTreat offers a delightful and immersive experience for those looking to explore the world of Japanese snacks. The subscription service provides a curated selection of both traditional and modern treats, allowing subscribers to embark on a culinary journey through the diverse flavors of Japan.
The inclusion of limited edition and exclusive items, thematic boxes, and a sense of community engagement adds a unique touch to the overall experience. The commitment to authenticity, quality ingredients, and the convenience of doorstep delivery contribute to the appeal of TokyoTreat.
The subscription service caters to snack enthusiasts who appreciate the surprise element, cultural exploration, and the opportunity to try a variety of snacks each month that may not be easily accessible in local stores.
It is also a fantastic gift idea for Japanophile friends and family members who will be delighted to receive such a variety of Japanese products - all in one nicely organized gift box.
