Oreo Peanut Butter Dip - Hockey Food Recipe

To prepare for this 'hockey night snack', I went to our local superstore (The Real Canadian Superstore - Loblaws) to pick up the ingredients I needed (also, who am I kidding? I'm a baker: I picked up a whole lot of other items that will make an appearance on this blog sooner or later).

Watching hockey is something I only became familiar with when my family moved to Canada some 6 years ago. Playing hockey, on the other hand (girl's floor hockey, to be specific), was always one of my favorite activities in gym class. Why? I don't know. All I can remember now are the many bruises around my ankles that would happily present themselves the next day.

Hockey and This Dip Goes Hand in Hand!

Otherwise, I am still trying to figure out hockey - the kind played on ice, by adult men, who get into fights a lot. What I understand for sure is that it is a really big deal in Canada. And the big die-hard hockey fans have to watch all the games. It is so big a deal that my mother-in-law allows her husband to eat dinner in front of the TV whenever it is "Hockey Night in Canada".

What I don't need any help with figuring out is food, especially cutsie sports-themed food. 😉 The star players in this hockey puck dip are peanut butter and Oreo cookies. I chose those in an attempt to make this snack appealing to everyone in the family, both the hockey fanatics and the peanut butter lovers (meaning: my husband - the non-hockey fan).

This dip is super easy to whip up - it took me less than 5 minutes. I then formed it into a disk shape by hand to represent a hockey puck (image courtesy to my husband Konrad - thanks darling!).

Oreo Baking Crumbs and NHL Lettering

To make the dip the right color, I covered it in store-bought Oreo baking crumbs. You could also crush some Oreo cookies yourself, but it will look less uniform.

I piped the NHL letters with some melted white chocolate. I don't quite trust my "hand-piping" so I pulled up a logo on my iPad, taped a piece of parchment paper over top, and copied the logo letters that way (ignore the soccer ball behind the letters - I have no idea whats it's doing there). All in all, I think this is a really smart move, and an easy way for anyone to replicate designs with relative ease.

Pop the letters into the freezer for a couple of minutes. Then you can easily peel them off and place them on the hockey puck dip.

Enjoy the dip with some pretzel sticks or other hockey stick imitating "dipping tools". A definite crowd-pleaser, to be sure! I just have to make sure my father-in-law does not spoil his dinner with just this dip...

Ingredients

• 2 tablespoons butter softened
• 2 ounces cream cheese softened
• ½ cup peanut butter
• ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
• ¾ cup icing sugar up to 1 cup
• 4 Oreo cookies chopped
• Oreo baking crumbs ⅓ to ½ cup
• white chocolate for letters

Instructions

 

• Combine softened butter, cream cheese, peanut butter and vanilla extract with your handheld mixer.
• Add the icing sugar ¼ cup at a time and mix until incorporated after each addition. If the mixture seems very sticky add the additional ¼ cup of icing sugar.
• Stir in chopped Oreo cookies by hand.
• Turn the mixture out on a piece of parchment paper and form into hockey puck (or any desired shape) with your hands. Chill mixture first, if it is too sticky to handle.
• Cover the top and sides of the hockey puck dip with Oreo baking crumbs. Remaining crumbs can easily be swept off the parchment paper.
• Pipe some lettering onto a piece of parchment paper with melted white chocolate. Place in the freezer for a couple minutes, then peel off letters and place on the hockey puck.
• Transfer the hockey puck to a serving plate and surround with pretzel sticks or other hockey stick imitation 'dipping tools'.
